Chapters

For the briefest moment our lines collide
Our words match and a chapter unfolds
It is the start of a beautiful story
Your words fit into my sentences perfectly
For a while at least
Until the page turns
The chapter closes
The story changes
A twist in the plot
It’s not supposed to happen this way
Like discovering your favourite character dies
A tragedy of sad words
Finding their way and fitting themselves
Into my happy story
I weep over lines
Wanting desperately to fling the book down
But I read on anyway
Turning the pages furiously looking for
Our words, our sentences, our story
Yet after a while I realize
That sometimes for a story to work
People have to die
People have to leave
People have to cry
Stories have to change
Chapters have to close
For new beginnings
And new endings
